Beat the Bathroom Blues

Bathroom, loo, lavatory, washroom, latrine, restroom, john, can, jacks, gents, ladies, privy, whatever you choose to call it, this facility is one every home has and just because it is the smallest room in the house doesn’t meant it can’t be big on personality!

Storage is the number one priority in the ‘wee house’ and purposeful, considered storage is essential to keeping the place neat and tidy.

Shower or bath, completely personal preference but if you have the room you should definitely opt for both. Never underestimate the power of a shower to energise and destress or the relaxation induced by immersing yourself in a bathtub. Top tip: if you are planning a bathroom opt for a tub with the foset in the middle so there are no arguments over who gets the side with the taps !

Mirror, mirror on the wall……..which one is fairest of them all. I have to admit that when it comes to mirrors in the bathroom that I always seem to opt for round ones ! The circular frame is a contrast to all the angular forms that are usually found on the tiles and the fittings and provides welcome relief with softer edges.

Tile style: I tend to stay away from pvc panelling in a bathroom and opt for a more traditional vibe, tiles can be the ultimate way to bring a wow factor to a space. Not feeling brave enough? Then choose a neutral and accessorise with brights. If budget allows tiling the whole bathroom from floor to ceiling can be a worthwhile investment, it is a lifetime job and will be easy to clean, less maintenance in such a damp atmosphere than constantly having to freshen up paint. I’d recommend choosing a tile you love, steer clear from fads or unusual high fashion shapes as these will date quickly and you will likely tire from them before your pocket allows you another splurge. It is like buying high fashion clothes, they will be alright for a while but will date quickly then you will no longer want to wear them. Think unique, classic and timeless.

Don’t forget the lighting. Multiple options here are good. Optimal lighting to see those hard to reach areas ! Wash, cleanse, style, tweeze, shave or wax good lighting is essential to get the job done right. A bright main light or light over the mirror is a must where as wall lights provide a more relaxed option when soaking in the tub.

Style it: well chosen accessories can make a bit impact, opt for larger items here, house plants always bring a fresh pop of colour to any space and you cant go wrong with lanterns in a bathroom. Don’t over do it, think of the endless cleaning around all those dust gatherers!
